A crash near Weatherly claimed the life of a 27-year-old woman and her unborn child Tuesday morning.

Katlyn Tarud, of Beaver Meadows, was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle crash along Spring Mountain Road in Banks Township.

A 3-year-old girl who was riding in the vehicle was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

According to police, around 9:30 a.m., Tarud was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer which left the road and struck a tree, causing heavy damage on the driver’s side.

Police said it appeared that the car initially traveled off the right side of the road and then crossed both lanes before striking the tree.

Spring Mountain Road was closed for several hours following the crash.

Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller said her death was caused by accidental blunt force trauma.

Family members told authorities that Tarud was expecting a child.

State police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 570-459-3890.
